Listened to Rory Sutherland talk about vapes earlier today and he made the point you could license pubs to sell disposable vapes so those that might have a crafty smoke would be able get a nicotine fix and pubs were already pretty good at keeping u18s out in the first place

They are illegal to sell to under 18s. And the risk of cancer from vapes is less than 1% of that of cigarettes.

But people overestimate risks of unfamiliar things, so weirdly fear vapes more than cigarettes, which actually do massively increase risk of cancer!

I’m a teacher. The under 18’s get hold of them freely, sadly. Vaping in toilets is widespread (The disposable ones. (They are unregulated and some have cannabis derivative in them. They are a useful aid for people to quit smoking but have been taken up by young non-smokers.

Right, but we don't ban adults from consuming alcohol just because under 18s get hold of it.... With every other type of underage behaviour we try to deal with it within the underage group - rather than making it illegal for everyone

Why not limit them to prescription only? I just have this horrible feeling it’s going to be a huge public health crisis (see ‘popcorn lung’). I hope I’m wrong.

No evidence for popcorn lung - that's a myth! And prescription only would risk fewer adults switching.... see Australia, which did exactly that
