The Boy in the Canvas dealt with abuse and neglect and religious institutions in a thoughtful way with some magic like elements.

Oops. Thanks for pointing it out. The Novella Something Sweet was a fun bit that reminded me of HP Lovecraft a bit. The Orchid Room was a supernatural thriller that had a strong female protagonist.
