My middle school son will never fall victim to learning gaps and deliberate erasure of our Yesterdays.
It is my obligation as a mother to teach him how we got to Today, then let him ponder how he wants to implement his Tomorrows.
I did teach it every year I was a history teacher and when I wasn’t, I read historical fiction/nonfiction books on Native American and all other cultures with my students.
Not a bragging moment- an Everyone can do this too. Libraries are still free, help keep knowledge alive with young people!!
I was a child in Tennessee and did actually learn about the Trail of Tears. It made me very sad. My favorite place to hang as a child was at a state park that was Native American land. I could feel the spirit of The People. Yes, I was a child white-eye wanna be. The Real Americans.
