Australia passed tough anti-hate crime laws, including mandatory minimum sentences for terror offenses and displaying hate symbols, in a bid to tackle a recent surge in antisemitism https://reut.rs/40PWtZF

Would like to see states do the same thing. That way, the next time Musk is in a state with similar laws, we can arrest him for violating data-privacy laws, etc.
As an Australian, this is targeting people tagging houses with swastikas, packing vans of homemade explosives and carrying out assaults and hate crimes at synagogues.
The mandatory sentencing is a bit dumb but so is the Australian public, and we have a federal election soon.
It’s already illegal to do the above, why expand on them…unless these laws could include ppl chanting “from the River to the Sea” or graffitiing a PMs office or placing a free Palestine sticker…
They don't. It is very concerning that it does include harsher penalties for protesting outside of a place of worship, but there have been some remarkably severe *actual* anti-Semitic attacks (not just pro Palestine) in Australia, and silence would have been damning against the LNP base.
It’s already illegal to do the Roman!!! The key here is what defines “antisemitism” and its interpretation. Like to most ppl antisemitism is basic - hatred directed at Jews for being Jews. But these days, if you listen to our politicians- it’s anyone protesting Israel’s barbaric campaign in Gaza.
This is our sensible, not Trump major party option. You should see the other guy, an ex-cop turned career politician who has directly quoted wanting to follow Trump's suit on trans rights and environmental protections.
Mandatory minimum sentences are not justice. They remove judicial discretion and decision making. This is reactionary bullshit designed to pacify the centre right before Dutton can get his hands on them. Another albanese disappointment.

I hope more countries do this. A hundred years later the same actions but funded by the richest people who've ever lived.
