His company Brookfield bought the land to produce market crops BEFORE Carney joined up in 2021. He had nothing to do with the acquisition starting in 2012…
… Marc Carney's role while at Brookfield involved raising a $15bn "transition fund" to invest in decarbonisation projects such as renewable and nuclear energy and battery storage. Brookfield says it no longer holds any investments in mining, forestry or agriculture in Brazil. Nice try.
Canadian friends, I'm a bit concerned by this, and I'm wondering if my fears are unfounded.
At the surface, at least looking in from afar, this seems like a very foolish move. Neoliberal governments around the world are being voted out in a wave of anti-establishment right wing populism. 1/4
This isn't the same scenario as the neolib governments across the world.
Our biggest former ally is now run by a demagogue, the rush to normalcy/technocratic ideals rather than into the arms of a party thats been parroting republican talking points for 2 decades is going to be fairly substantial.
Carney is a former Goldman Sachs banker. He seems the exact kind of establishment corporate liberal candidate that is losing elections across the Western world. The attacks write themselves. Goldman Sachs is a slimy and corrupt organization. 2/4
It's not hard to portray former employees as similarly corrupt. Carney would likely be a very good Prime Minister, but nominating him just seems like a complete failure to read the room. Corporate liberals are losing election after election, and Canada just nominated another one. 3/4
At least that's my perception as just an American looking in from afar. Is this an unfair characterization? Does Carney risk sharing the same fate as pro-corporate centrist liberals like Kamala or Hillary? To me, his background seems like the worst choice for this moment in history. 4/4
Yah that is unfair.. the majority of us in Canada like to have someone competent in leadership of our country and his background as an economist (and Governor of Bank of Canada) helped Canada get through the crisis of 2008. We remember that, we know he can be trusted.
Read his book,"Values". He supports a market economy, not a market society. Believes in social equity & climate action. A strong, sustainable economy = well funded public services, social programs & safety nets, & climate action. Was the UN special Envoy Climate Action & Finance too
The Canadian ideology is not like america’s. Carney is the former governor of both the Bank of Canada & Britain. He is intelligent, has experience with crisis economies, has a global reputation. In my opinion Kamala and Hillary being liberal isn’t the reason why American didn’t elect them.
Who else did we have? It's not like there was 17 other choices. And this wasn't elections, he was voted in to replace Trudeau up until the elections. We can't have a weak candidate against Poilièvre.
Carney is better than Poilièvre in every way that counts.
He doesn't seem the type that is prepared to sell his message to those of low intelligence. Which is a shame, because you need to be able to do that if you want to be a politician. It's part of the job. Everyone gets to vote, not only the highly intelligent.
Carney was not born into wealth. He was born in Fort Smith NWT and lived in Edmonton a city in Alberta. He is the son of educators. He knows the world and respects the value of community.
He hasn’t been with Goldman Sachs since 2008. Since then he has been governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England. Both non-partisan, non-profit banks that set monetary policy.
Carney is popular for his accomplishments as a very high profile economist, needed in Canada to counter economic threats from without. Unlike Harris, he is a new face on the scene. Liberal party voters are confident he can help pilot us through the upcoming storms.
🇨🇦🇺🇦🤔Donald Trump thought he was jealous of PM Trudeau-
He hasn’t seen anything yet!
Mark Carney has a steady hand, a history of fiscal responsibility and accountability-
Everything Donald Trump doesn’t!

🇨🇦🇺🇦 I’m not sure how to answer that one—
You make it sound nefarious—
Do you mean pin up as ladies liked him or did the British rags try to spin his image into something that propagates gossip like he was a ladies man?
I doubt the latter very much.
🇨🇦🇺🇦Thanks for clarifying-
I had just been told by some guy (prior to your previous post) I should go back to humping my poster of PM Trudeau so I thought:
JFC—not someone else accusing our new PM of being a pin-up poster-
Phew, that’s a relief-
Women like MC probably because he is respectable!
The west needs to elect leaders who work with Ottawa instead of pandering to the south. We are only screwed because we screw ourselves time and time again.
He is an educated, experienced, professional with extensive credentials and contacts internationally.
A serious, principled man with excellent leadership abilities.
He has no bankruptcies or scandals.
He has been an advisor to both major parties.
He is a polar opposite to Trump.
Carney is our man.
America would very much like to borrow Justin Trudeau when he's free. We'll trade trump, and ya'll can do what you want with him; wood chipper, pig food, hang him over a pit in a cage and let folks piss on him. Go nuts!
Please respond soonest.
And Carney's mandate is for him to take an even tougher stand against Trump's bullying. Here's to this new Canadian PM showing himself worthy of this mandate...
Congratulations to all of Canada 🇨🇦 on the election of your new Prime Minister Mark Carney 🍁, it really shows that Canadians are smarter than a lot of Americans, 🇺🇸 and no disrespect to the American people who voted for the Prosecutor and not the Convicted Felon!

Trudeau is not clinging to power in Canada like you did in the United States.
I wish the environmentalists could actually agree on the facts.

This is 22 year ago.
Remember, the Democrats tried this exact play. They had an unpopular candidate and tried to replace them. It's Déjà vu.
Carney is better than Poilièvre in every way that counts.
Worked pretty well for "felon rapist Trump"
Democratic governments do not "rule".

The PCs have used their time to dismantle the country that was built for every Canadian. The 'takers'.
Unfortunately the youth and much of Gen Z didn't experience enough of that history.
Just sayin'
