Our elf visits but doesn’t get u to shenanigans of any kind and also doesn’t narc (this is Rick’s thing, etc), which made it EXTRA funny earlier today when Carter was having a meltdown, we were all ignoring him, and we overheard “stop wookin’ at me, BUDDY!” (That’s the elf, obvs)
Our elf doesn’t shenanigan. I stayed out of elves for years and years and years and then the kids had kinder and first grade teachers who had classroom elves (which seems weird for a public school!) and the kids were like but why doesn’t an elf come HERE so now he does 👎🏻👎🏻
There was a lot of elf-peer-pressure for some years. And if you want to do shenanigans with your elf, by all means, go with god, but if you post twee scenes with cheerios and shit, I am unfollowing 🤣
Yes! My nana had one of these! I bought the girls a book that came with an Elf on the Shelf before Pinterest turned them into A Whole Deal, and I remember being so excited because it was so similar to Nana’s elf. We never really ever get into the performative song and dance aspect.
Why do so many people want to tech their kids that they won't get presents unless a cop elf watches them and exists as a toy that they aren't ever allowed to touch?
And so much is performative for other people - buying additional stuff to make clever/funny scenes for the elf, take photos for social media, etc. in our house we don't mess with the fae, full stop.
I grew up hearing about how fairies live under the Fairy Bridge and are too fast for humans to see sparkle lovely etc and also they might switch out your baby just because they feel like it and you should never try to cheat one because they’re vindictive 🙃🤣
Many years ago I simply said, "Oh, we don't celebrate like that," when a small child asked about the elf, similar to how we don't celebrate Hannukah bc we're not Jewish, and it was promptly dropped. I am still patting myself on the back for that move.
I did that successfully with my oldest and also with the two youngest until the year they were in first and kinder and BOTH their teachers do like the narc elf and my kids were like the teacher says if we BELIEVE the elf will come HOME so like a sucker I went in. So this will be my 3rd year.
The elf doesn’t do shit. He moves around. Mostly the teen has been the one who has remembered to move the elf so idk what it will look like now that he’s away in college 😂
It’s not cool!! I also have objections to an elf in a public school like this feels very much like we are pushing religion in there? I’m an atheist Christmas gal but should Christmas be going THIS HARD at SCHOOL? In California??
