So students pick out one quote from the reading that resonated with them, give comment/analysis on that quote, and then ask a question. - ThreadSky

While I'm sure some parts of this can be done by ChatGPT, I genuinely don't think a lot of students tried to do so. By having something that is pretty low stakes to check their reading, I think it removed a lot of incentive to use gen AI tools. It was also useful data for me to know what to focus on

So I did 13 of these this term (top 10 scores counted; the other three dropped). I decided to grade them all myself and we did them at the start of classes, unannounced (I also had a modified version I did for students with accomodations). Since I did all the grading, I didn't respond.

If I split grading or did fewer in a future term, I think I would try to do responses to the questions or more thoroughly integrate them into lecture material. Grading was 10/10 if you did all three parts well. 8/10 if you did all three but your comment was more on the summary end.

6/10 if you did 2 out of 3 of those parts. 5/10 if you did the wrong reading but still did all three parts. 4/10 if you did just one part.

For reference, this was a 70ish person class. It took ~60 minutes to read and grade each response (I'm a fairly fast reader). So if you did this every class for this size and taught 2x per week, it would take ~2 hours per week of grading.

I think I'm going to do something similar for my next Intro to Theory class. A bit more involved as I'm planning for it to be their main assignments (using contract grading), but I'm experimenting with ways to have them engage with the reading and practice argumentation

I really liked it! It was easy to grade, low prep to prepare, and meant students always had some interesting questions to ask during class.
