A small team of these editors could, with a modest time investment and effectively no start-up budget, create an open access journal -- say, "Theories of Society" -- with the same editorial board and consulting editors.

Fundamentally, this is a collective action problem. It's solvable.

I don’t publish much in theory per se but I’d want to do my part (as a reviewer or whatever) to support this effort — I bet a LOT of us would.

Yeah, it’s working relationships and reputation that are hard to replicate. The editors own the first already and can pretty clearly win the tug-of-war for the second.

(Side note but just as a policy person now, it’s clear to me that you’d want an easy way for a reader to scan the bib to see that this is the new and good journal and not the zombie, so like “Theory and Social Critique” or whatever)

It is obvious that Springer should have consulted the editorial board and obvious that the board and others should resign in protest. It is also obvious that removing those who mismanaged the journal for so many decades is also correct.

I have no idea what the "corresponding editors" are and how they differ from the "editorial board" that resigned a week earlier but my guess is probably that the corresponding editors didn't have the ability to fix the problems of the journal.

They absolutely don’t have the power to fix anything. Which is why the top editor job should have rotated years ago.
