Not be pedantic but it’s “Irish” not “Gaelic” (Gaelic is the name of the language family) and being an Irish immigrant has no bearing on speaking Irish in this case because the English did all they could to eradicate the Irish language LONG before the Irish immigrated to the US.
It h as only been since the establishment of the Irish Republic that Irish has begun to see any kind of renaissance (and I use that term loosely) and that is largely due to a requirement for all secondary school children to pass an Irish exam on their leaving cert (essentially graduate high school).
No it really wasn’t. I lived in Ireland. Gaelic is language family. Irish is what is spoken in Ireland. Welsh is spoken in Wales. Scots (or Scottish Gaelic) is spoken in Scotland and Manx is spoken on Isle of Man. Those are all Gaelic languages. But there is no language called “Gaelic”.
Trust me when I say it is a sore spot with the Irish. They find it REALLY annoying when folks refer to Irish as Gaelic. I got numerous earfuls from multiple people early on.
It doesn't really matter in terms of this discussion. What matters is that the person who was doing the complaining is the "melting pot" effect where after a generation or two, the vast majority are just plain Americans.
