I'd say it's recommended but so far I don't think you need it to understand the story in 2.

They're stand alone far as I can tell.

You'll get more out of the sequel if you play the original first, but it's not required reading. If anything, the fact that no one really knows anything is a key aspect of the world's narrative, so if anything being a bit lost might be more immersive.
