Not great for staff, but so many places tightening their strings it's not great for freelancers either. I find myself overworking just in case I have a lean few months (such as a few months coming up) because nothing's consistent enough to rely on.

Ugh, yeah. I couldn't make it as a freelancer. Too much stress, too much uncertainty, instant depression. Freelance budgets seem to be the first thing that gets cut when corporate nukes the overall budget.

Too true. That's why I have many irons in the fire these days, from motorcycle journalism on multiple sites to editing articles for an automotive PR company, and even the occasional book edit. Once in a great while I even write something for *gasp* print!

Right!! While my early work on Oppo was certainly not as good as recent stuff, there was some good stuff there, and now it’s gone forever.

Another place I worked for has replaced some of my more technical articles with others containing far less info and detail. Many others are now gone forever.
