There is of course the *other* controversial view, which is Gandalf was just a FIGHTER with a high INT, not a Magic-User. This jives with the fact that he carried and used Glamdring, but
the red-box B/X rules and 1e rules forbid magic-users from using martial weapons other than a dagger.
