Most of the times, the tech had to evolve because of societal changes thus redefining a lot of things along the way. I believe this has lead to mindless (mostly) "upgrade to new and discard old"

For example: buying a "smart" home product

As of late, I'm feeling were in the "enshittification" phase where we just force useless tech iterations down the user throats.

Back to original question, Has any piece of tech ever solved a problem (maybe continue to do so) permanently without reinventing itself everytime?🤔

Fire is good.

The wheel continues to do amazing things.

I like getting paid every 2 weeks. Computers do a great job of insuring that happens.

Ever get on an airplane? They're pretty incredible.

But, if by "Technology" you mean your iPhone, I agree 100%.

Yeah. I mean that we are treating tech as a very volatile entity prone to constant change.

I'm always thinking about "mission critical" systems like an airplane. It's great that we systems like these to rely on

OTOH, we have a constant flood of updates to justify the existence of the products

Also, reflecting on this from another perspective, a few hours later... a lot of our digital solutions are "best shot given time and circumstance". Learning to do things better probably is a given in this space. So things becoming overhauled later on is most likely a constructive pattern.

That said... user research, user experience design, the fundamental respect for customers, a willingness to not confuse "solutions that work now" with "overengineering designed by FAANG" (cough, cloud-first over local-first, cough), an avoidance of anti-patterns. There's plenty of shit design churn.

To me it feels like those issues underpin a lot of the "brokenness" in the modern ecosystem more than anything else. There's a lack of commitment of things to values Other Than Money. And hence good things die and shitty things churn into another shitty thing.

Tbh, philosophically I‘ve developed a more and more… complex and critical relationship with a lot of data science. The science of numbers and management based on them is steeped in the enterprises of power.

But, if you‘d ask me for a genuine problem solving through computers… computer tomography. 3D medical imaging depends so much on algorithms from pre-processing to rendering the gained data, and it gives surgeons so much more information in trauma care and prevention.
