Man I'm so fucking upset. The developer I admired my entire career, the creator of the most fucking used POSIX system fucking hates me for the things I have 0 control over fml

i'm hoping that this whole situation is just a huge misunderstanding and not Linus going haywire out of the blue
i just don't want to believe that such a genius and nice person could've said what he said...
Honestly I am not surprised with what happened. What I am surprised is how unprofessional and not transparent has it been handled. It is not the first time i see Linus demonstrating zero people communication skills.
Got laid off in late 2023, spent the first half of 2024 struggling to find a job in the EU.
I faced god knows how many rejections just because of my passport, I think. Two recruiters even told me outright to “get another citizenship, if you can.”
Its crazy. The "open" in open source used to mean something. Imagine punishing the people of a country for the actions of their government which they probably don't even endorse. Really disappointed in Linus.
Anyways, the situation there must be tough for the average citizen who probably had no reasons to support the war but now is seeing his family and friends being conscripted, international services being restricted in their country and having a bad reputation outside it.
The worst part of this situation is that now kremlin mfs are gonna be using this in their stupid propaganda. Linus has done nothing but fueled even more hate with his response. Should've just silently removed maintainers with a single message "sanctions, sorry" and be done with it.
You're sure doing this silently would have been better? Sounds a whole lot less transparent to me. It would have been propagandized as covert western deep state influence.
this is why i said he could have made up some reason for it if not silent. but either way, it's better than bringing disgusting politics just because those people are from a country that you don't agree with. this is gatekeeping and it's disgusting
what I feel it is always best to separate a person's work from their personality. i respect a lot of people for their work but i try not know what the person is like irl, because it will probably/most likely dissapoint me
If i decipher Torvalds' message correctly it's more of a legal thing rather than anything else.
Although he did say: ..."Did you think I'd be *supporting* Russian aggression?"...
Somewhat fair question, given we're two years into the invasion and so many projects have had to split off their Russian collaborators. I honestly am surprised it took the kernel development team this long to get around to it.

If he was American, I have no doubt who he’d be voting for next month given the type of language he frequently uses. Guy is such a toolbag, ugh.
War brings nothing good, that's for sure.
as a palestinian who's been through such discrimination just for being born in my country, i fully understand how you feel about this
will continue to support you!
i hate how people bring politics into everything, like if the person isn't doing shit wrong, why fire remove them/fire them?
just because they don't share your opinion doesn't make them bad people

We need to deal with facts here. This is bigger than Linux.
