It is a bit of a nonsense legacy though - 1st and 2nd class that is… everyone’s post should have equal priority and it should be delivered all week for a sensible price - like everything else that’s been privatised, the wealthy get a better service than the rest of us!

Not quite true. What has destroyed the biz model of Royal Mail is email. No body uses the post anymore. Much cheaper and more reliable to use it.
