Tough one, not a Generative AI fan here, but maybe if the player was new, excited to use AI, having that momentary "wow how good is this!?" moment and seemed genuine then I'd probably let it slide - for that first session. If they were naive and good hearted and well-intentioned.

I've had this happen as well -- highly disconcerting. I just quietly informed the player that GenAI stuff wasn't reliable enough for the established setting and then shortly after instituted a full AI ban on my Discord! 👍🏼

I would only be
concerned if the
backstory sounded
amazingly similar to
a known work. “My character served 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread to feed my starving nephew. Now, I’m the beloved mayor of a small town.” :-)

It depends on how the players use it. If they build off of it and use it as a starting place for the character, I would be ok with it.

If they simple made a dumb backstory with a handful of mishmashed characters that are vaguely playable, I would be quite frustrated.

1) I would want them to have discussed it first with me and the entire group. 2) even if allowed, it shouldn’t be being used to generate an entire backstory. Maybe for a couple of ideas to generate from.

I would struggle.

I know some RPers who use chatGPT a lot and I don’t get it.

If I need to generate content for a character, I wouldn’t rob myself of the joy of the process. The process, while hard sometimes, is what makes art worth it.

This is essentially how I feel. Storytelling is the best part! Someone said they were excited to use AI to generate their bardic inspiration rhymes and I was like... what is the point?! This whole thing gave me the ick, sure, but mostly made me sad.

If all the effort they put into making the character was Chat-GPT then I wouldn’t play with that person. Frankly I don’t know why they’d even want to play that character.
