You see this in rural Canada now. It's upsetting on so many levels. Not least of which is we have our own racist past -- you don't need to appropriate one and put up a Confederate flag.

it's easy to observe this in the increasingly homogenous "rural" culture and identity becoming unmoored from region or geography. regions that were once totally distinct, applachia, the lowland south, the great plains, the interior west, now all have a shared faux-redneck culture
