It's not easy, neither of them was prepared to develop such strong feelings, but they're drawn to each other anyway. Both know the burden of a duty and the solitude of it.

Caius doesn't immediately trust everything Emet says, but he's curious, wants to know more - he always tries to find reasons

He genuinely wanted to find a better path, a common ground. It pains him to realize he wasn't enough, that he failed.

They meet privately several times, it's in these moments when they actually start to see each other past the titles or any assumptions. Caius is scared of how he feels, not ready to admit it but unable to fight it. He even starts to wait for the secret meetings. Emet is the only one not lying to him

and he appreciates it. They find an understanding but don't agree on everything. Caius sees the value & beauty in the world he's fought so hard to save, in the people and their good will, when Emet thinks the opposite. Neither will yield. Caius never wanted to fight but it's inevitable, no choice.

Elpis is another kind of heartbreak, to be reunited but not really. Only at the end on the flower field in UT they say their goodbyes, Caius gets a forehead kiss and encouragement to live on, travel, seek discovery. He takes it to heart, even if it hurts to be left behind. But it's a promise.
