BR era pacifics were really hit or miss. The Standard 6s also suffered a bit (although nowhere near as badly, but then the Standard 7s and Bulleids seemed to do real well

Brits were good, Clans were a tad redundant, Bulleids were easier to service but 2/3 had worse versatility

I'd say clans were only redundant as they weren't properly utilized because they were so few. I think a Pacific that could go to lighter loading gauge lines could be very useful (as the Bulleid light pacifics showed)

Yes and no; they were great on the WCML proper, but further north in Scotland there wasn't much they could do that a Black 5 or B1 couldn't. Double blastpipes could be a fix, but when neither the Brits or Brit-Cap Standard 5's needed them... something doesn't add up

I also don't buy the "they could do what a 7 could with a good crew on the WCML but we're no better than a 5 otherwise". I'm chalking that down to inexperience or straight out favoritism to the pre nationalization engines

I don't think double pipes would be needed, the blast pipe and chimney was just mistakenly made too small, which was able to be rectified
