Since they are definitely going to try to kill Social Security, it is worth mentioning that it is one of the most successful poverty reduction programs of all time.

The most successful socialist program that American people invest in. Billionaires want to get their hands on this money. Social Security could be easily expanded by having the rich pay a little more. Scrap the Cap. Scrap the Cap. Scrap thd Cap. Scrap the Cap.
There are ~60 million Americans over 65. This graph shows a reduction roughly from 80% to 10%. It would not be implausible to argue killing Social Security would reverse this, so saying 42 million Americans would be cast into poverty by killing Social Security isn't an unfair assertion.
@kerim.one The middle ground smart move: Do the republican thing and "invest" the money in something. Getting rid of it is a waste when it would sustain itself if you let the immigrants continue to pay into it without getting anything back.
It helped reduce "the poverty rate among Americans aged 65 and older from as high as 78 percent in 1939 to 35 percent in 1959 – as Social Security benefits began kicking in – to 10 percent by 1995."
Seniors of both parties would riot but wait till their kids realize they’d have to make up the difference. I could never have supported my parents. Their SS income was way more than I could swing.
I'm not trying to attack Social Security, but calling it "poverty reduction" is a blatant lie. It is enforced poverty. Social Security does not pay enough to provide any meaningful stability or QOL. Do you know how many places in the US are accessible to someone making $900 a month? Section 8 >
The government isn’t giving people money with Social Security. We all pay into it as soon as we start working. It is OUR money that the government uses, INTEREST FREE, until it has to start repaying us at retirement age. Stop talking as if it’s an entitlement program.
Social Security Is not the same as income tax or sales tax. It is like a mandatory insurance policy and your payout is guaranteed by the government, with the amount determined by your lifetime payments. Very different from general taxes, which you pay with no guaranteed return.
I don't know why you are trying to argue this with me as though anything I said had anything to do with how Social Security works vs. other social programs.
It's irrelevant to the point being made. Which is that we have observed time and time again the best anti-poverty measure is: pay folks.
I’m not arguing with the idea of the government helping people who need it. I see that you are Canadian and perhaps you don’t understand the history of Social Security in the US. Technically, our Social Security payments never belong to the government. It’s like a pension fund.

It is more accurately described as a polite eugenics program meant solely to keep poor people from revolting.
