I studied the initial reaction to Musk's takeover in the French media sector. Censorship of journalists + Twitter Blue subscription model were the immediate factors that made journalists concerned over Twitter's legitimacy as a journalistic tool.

However (as we all may relate to), journalists mostly did not abandon ship completely. Rather, they employed various forms of strategic disconnection (@journoscholar.bsky.social, @dianabossio.bsky.social) to align their platform use with their values.

The discussion around the question "should we leave Twitter?" brought in a more general questioning of the normative legitimacy of social media use in the media industry - "to what extent do the digital tools we use serve our professional values as journalists?"

At the time of the study, it was still too early to say where people would migrate, but anecdotally, I found a lot of parellels to the post-Musk discussion in academia, politics, and any other place where people have to use platforms they do not control to promote their work.
