Hockeypocalypse: Slashers is a book that a lot of people miss because they're like "oh I don't watch hockey." What they're missing is a high-energy horror story with all the action and big ideas of the best cult classics, combined with a thoughtful emotional story about identity and achievement.

And yeah, the sport is just a mechanism to get a bunch of characters together and create/resolve conflict. The actual story is about those characters, but people are easily swayed by the trappings.
