Yeah, there's never a reason to strike a child. Even if they're biting you, pry them off in self-defense, don't strike them.
There's lots of reason to get physical with a child, such as restraining them for their own safety if they're in a dangerous situation, but that should never cause pain.
And by get physical, I do just mean initiate physical contact the child may not want for their own benefit. If my son is running into traffic it's ok to restrain him in a big hug, even if he doesn't want it, to keep him from getting in the street.
