I think the worst outcome of the problem with bots since 2015ish is not that the bots have become more sophisticated (which they have), but that the effect has been so successful, people have adopted what made them identifiable into an online culture.

They’re not bots, that’s a soothing myth we tell ourselves. Most accounts are real, they represent thousands and thousands of people who have been turned into maladjusted lunatics by the internet. It’s poisoning our society because this is the public square where people go to learn what is normal
