Sanaa was her parent’s first born child, their “first joy”. She was born in the Al-Bareej Refugee camp. She remembers a happy childhood — where she would run with friends, and bargain with the shopkeepers like she was a little merchant.

But behind the smiles, there was pain. When she was 3 her father was arrested by the occupation. She remembers visiting him once, to see him from behind bars. She asked why she couldn’t hug him, why he couldn’t go to buy sweets.

In the coming years, almost all her uncles would also be imprisoned.

Her father, Mr. Sayed, was released when she was 4 years old. Today, he is 52 years old, a kind-hearted mechanic who worked tirelessly day and night to provide for his family. Her mother, Mrs. Noha, is a meticulous and hardworking housewife who led the upbringing of their nine children.

Among these children: Mohamed, 30 years old, a successful lawyer who had his own office before the genocide; Ahmed, 28 years old, a mechanic and car technician who worked alongside his father; Mahmoud, 27 years old, who worked as a taxi driver;

Hanaa, 26 years old, a smart and accomplished engineer in the field of design; Dalal, 22 years old, who was following in Hanaa’s footsteps; and Yasser, 19 years old, who achieved an impressive 94.7% in his high school final exams and aspired to become an engineer.

Not an Arabic speaker (at least at these levels!) but really good interviewer with lots of empathy and compassion. Perhaps can help/amplify those who can speak English? Let’s try to connect off line perhaps Friday? (Teaching all day tdy/tom).
