it's so discouraging how so many people are happy to gloss over how serious covid is now. getting a life-threatening, possibly disabling illness should not be an expected part of everyday life.

I personally know at least 4 people who have long covid, the kind that causes chronic fatigue, sets off secondary illnesses, has drastically changed their lives. I know dozens of people who have had the less serious version, where recovery took 3-6 months
yep! we know that covid causes long term risks for vascular conditions. i also suspect that the way that covid deaths are being documented currently is to obscure that the root cause was covid. no covid label for post covid heart attacks, strokes, embolisms, ect.
it's such a rude awakening to so many what being disabled is like in this country. they assume there's a safety net until they're personally falling with nothing to catch them. the people least equipped to deal with disability are often those who left the disabled people in their lives behind
disabled people have been dealing with this for a long fucking time. every accommodation that exists now was fought for. our survival is a communal effort that abled people tap out of when it's no longer "fun"
idk listen to disabled people when we tell you this shit is serious. build community with them Now, instead of when you're newly sick and isolated. think about how you would survive if you were unable to continue working and the government did nothing to help. protect yourself and your community
I appreciate what you are saying in a way I haven’t been able to before this moment. During COVID I’ve been so angry about a different issue, which might not seem related but I think is. Is open source knowledge that .5-1 million children globally die annually due to something we CAN prevent…
which is dehydration and waterborne disease. However, no, we don’t care until we’re terrified we are personally going to die. If I had had any faith in humans left, it would have been gone. I’ve not met a single human i trust or with whom I want to build community. Groups trust violent idiots.
As someone who knows people who have long covid to a disabling degree, and who knows people who lost babies to it, yeah. It's not something I can easily be okay with just getting or spreading.
