great article, particularly enjoyed the comparison of kirby and martinez and the analysis of pitches thrown by count of the latter. hitting is so hard when you can’t predict what’s coming
as someone who loves the nerd side of ball but pitched at a high level, there’s a big disconnect. on the analytic side, we’re quick to dismiss the old heads (usually for good reason), but the reality is somewhere in the middle. my coaching mantra is “train new school, play old school”
I tend to believe certain pitches can affect the spin off the bat.
I think the industry cares so much about the spin to the plate and not enough about the spin off the bat.
Probably cause trackman isn’t public.
