An excellent episode. The parts in particular regarding Brexit and the state of the two "main" parties needs to be shouted from the rooftops. Labour and the Conservatives need to take heed before it's too late. Keir Starmer need to wake up and start being honest with the country.

I saw Chris Pattern and others of his generation of politicians speak at a Uni events many years ago - I was struck and admired the depth of knowledge and experience they have (even if I didn't agree with the politics). I do wonder if it is still the case in today's sound bite world?

I was working in HK at the same time as Chris Patten and have huge respect and admiration for what he did there. I also appreciate the way he always uses the word “murders” to describe what happened in Tiananmen Square. I love HK too and what the CCP has done to it breaks my heart.

We watched him leaving Hong Kong I think on Britannia. 2 weeks later we were on a wine tour in France. 20 British people went into restaurant and only other people in the were him and his wife. They must have cringed. But we left them alone.

I can’t agree with that. He simply didn’t have any authority other than to negotiate the one country - two policies buffer and to allow as many HK citizens to become British as possible.

Really? Judging by how much the CCP hated him and how much he’s still admired by a lot of HK ppl (yes, I lived through his years as HK Governor), I’d say he did more than expected. Thatcher sold out HK with that joint declaration back in the 80s.

Back in the 90s I used to loathe all these old Tories and I was distraught when the Major govt hung on in 92. Nowadays I've developed a real soft spot for the likes of Patten, Major, Clarke and Heseltine. I almost feel like they're further left than much of today's Labour Party. How times change.
