Aww, that's a bummer. For non Gundam mecha anime, I'd suggest Full Metal Panic, and for Super Robot shenanigans, Gao Gai Gar.

Oh Full Metal Panic is a great suggestion. I dropped it when I was a teen and not into mecha, I’m curious what I think of it now.
