For you youngsters out there, the US USED to be better at supporting its artists, by the way. The National Endowment for the Arts did some lovely things.

And like most of the beautiful parts of our country. Ronald Reagan stripped them away.

Reagan really pioneered dismantling everything that caused the explosion of US prosperity post WWII. Because "TaXeS" & "BiG GuvErNMnt". E.g. ROI cults & hostile takeovers; investment company buys successful company & strips & sells successful divisions, raids pensions, loads w/debt & skedaddles.

Yes. Always hate when people think referencing the Reagan era is a good thing. Having lived through it, I can say Reagan and Reagan Republicans fundamentally changed the way this country sees itself. And the change is unambiguously awful.

Yes. When Goldwater lost in ‘64, the right started building an infrastructure, physical and (what passed for) intellectual. It seemed at the time like they were playing the long game, but in retrospect, it is kind of amazing how quickly they worked. Courting corporate cash speeds the plough.
