reminds me of my funder's (BBSRC EASTBIO) two-tier internship programme where (for a compulsory internship!) students who can't afford to travel and rent elsewhere for 3 months are told to find somewhere local or just do a remote placement... while wealthy students go work in-person at the UN

Good report here on internships. 20% are secured through family or friends. 1 in five are unpaid. 40% of interns rely on parental financial support. The result? Working class graduates are 20% less likely to secure an internship. Tell me again about meritocracy.
