That is a great idea; especially in adjacent spaces with doors. Big proponent of keeping noise in libraries down. Great community spaces so why not find additional community uses?
📚💪 Health & wellness classes at libraries are a game changer! They provide free access to vital health info, boost community health literacy, and promote healthy habits. By partnering with health experts, libraries are becoming essential hubs for wellness (and reading).
Libraries are doing amazing things like this in my area in Wisconsin, and they have become creative and vibrant community centers in small towns. This is happening as fewer and fewer people are reading actual books. And the MAGA leaders in my own community are trying to shut down the library.😪
I think this is a really smart, strategic move by libraries. They're positioning themselves as essential hubs for health and wellness, which will only strengthen their relevance and importance going forward.
If a library card could get you a breakfast or lunch I would donate to the library. I don't know about health classes unless public health agency was involved.
Libraries: not just for books anymore! Free health and wellness classes are an amazing way to empower communities. Knowledge is power, but so is good health. Props to libraries for leveling up as hubs of learning and well-being.
I believe that libraries and local community centers are really good for everyday people to learn, grow, and provide a safe spaces for those who need it.
Btw, when the GOP start cutting budgets: Everyone needs to be on their Senators & Reps asses to protect the libraries!! Libraries are Not going to run like businesses, they don’t exist to make money!
I love and support this and am glad its happening but it also makes me sad and angry that libraries have been pushed into this zone; they shouldn't have to do EVERYthing to help and support those who need it. They are already doing more for unhoused ppl & kids than is their remit.
At my old library, we offered citizenship classes and partnered with a local organization to hold ESL classes. We had patrons pass their citizenship tests and it was awesome
Houston Public Libraries offer all of this as well as Passport processing. Free access to computers, laptops, movies, & music. Don’t get me started on the online resources & services free to the public.
I used to do passports at a library in Texas. Also I taught basic Spanish for English speakers. Libraries are so much more than simple book repositories
I got my babysitting license when I was 12 at my local library. Was taught how to care for infants and toddlers along with CPR. Libraries are the best!!
I used to work for a community hospital that offered free health and wellness classes. Immediately after the schedule was published, we would be flooded with calls from people complaining about the "demonic" yoga classes. They were batshit crazy.
The problem is that around here and in many other places in the US library’s have been facing book bans and so on. Then when a librarian or a head librarian or whoever it is in a district that dictates what books are in a library says no then some of the book banners have pushed to get them fired…
The book bans are insidious and evil especially when the pitchfork mob want to use pressure to remove library staff. In Canada book challenges are rare.
Love the idea, but around here they do it during the day, catering to retired people and rich, spoiled housewives. They need to do them in the evening so us poor schmucks who work can get involved.
And I used to work an 3pm-11pm shift at a grocery store and a 10 am class would have been great for me. I’m not such not retired, and I work full time. You’re making libraries out to be the villain when they do what they can with the people who show up. Sponsor an instructor for a PM class
Please don't forget to Report and Block problematic users v engaging with them. Seems they were bored Thanksgiving week and X doesn't provide access to sane people, migrating here to troll is their body of work.
It’s true, I’ve seen it in FL. The libraries have evolved to fit the needs of Americas & are so much more than a place to check out books. 📚 Pls give them a look or they will soon disappear. 😱 Not everyone can afford to buy books & they serve a valuable need for so many, in so many ways!
