As a child, he earned the nickname of Gump from his friends as they believed he resembled the comic strip character Andy Gump.
In 1946-47, he began playing for the Verdun Coyotes of the QJHL.

In the autumn of 1952, the New York Rangers signed him. In his first NHL season, with the last-place Rangers, he had 15 wins and 33 losses.
That year, he won the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year.

While the Rangers were never a contender during that time, the play of Worsley kept them in the playoff picture in several seasons.

He spent the next two seasons playing for the Quebec Aces of the AHL before being called up to the Canadiens. He played for Montreal until 1969.

He won the Stanley Cup four times in 1965, 1966, 1968 and 1969. He also picked up two Vezinas.
When Sam Pollock planned to send him to the minors, his time with Montreal ended.

Worsley retired from the NHL in 1974 at the age of 44.
In his NHL career, he had 335 wins, 352 losses, 160 ties and 43 shutouts.
