Galloway was born in Buffalo on March 24, 1882, but he was raised in Dunnville, Ontario. A gifted hockey player, he played hockey for the Woodstock Hockey Club in the Central Ontario Hockey Association. He was known as a cool and collected player on the ice.

He also played baseball. From 1897 to 1898, he played for a Dunnville team.
In the summer of 1899, he started playing for the Woodstock Bains of the Canadian League. He was dismissed from the club that year when a white player on the team objected to his presence.

Many in Woodstock wanted Galloway to stay on the team. One local sportswriter wrote: "An effort should be made to keep Hippo in town. Our hockey team needs him." It was all in vain as the team refused to allow him to play.

Galloway was the last Black player in Canadian organized baseball for the next half century. After he was dismissed from the team, Galloway left Canada to play for the Cuban X-Giants of the Negro League where he excelled as a player.

Hipple Galloway died in 1943, only a few years before Jackie Robinson suited up for the Montreal Royals and then the Brooklyn Dodgers.
In 2021, Galloway was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.
