He taught his sons to play hockey on the farm and believed daily chores would develop strength for hard shots.
Max played for Rosetown in the SIHL where he led the league in scoring.

After playing in the SSHL and AHL, the Chicago Black Hawks to sign him. He played his first NHL game on Nov. 21, 1940. He scored his first goal on Dec. 1 of that same year.

On Jan. 1, 1943, Max, Reg and Doug became the first brothers to play on a single line in the NHL.

In 1945-46, Bentley won the scoring title and was awarded the Hart Trophy. He won the scoring title again in 1946-47.
Six games into the 1947-48 season, Bentley was traded to the Maple Leafs.

In 1951, Bentley won his third Stanley Cups and had 13 points in the playoffs.
On Nov. 5, 1952, he reached 500 points.
