I was a traffic cop in Toronto until 1981, and was once assigned a paid duty at a Littlest Hobo shoot. During breaks, the owner let me sit in the back of his station wagon with whichever dogs weren’t working right then. They are the only celebrities I’ve ever scratched behind the ears.

The origin of The Littlest Hobo dates back to an American film from 1958 of the same name. The film was set in California, and featured a dog who helped people in the community. The movie was a success, leading to the creation of a television show in Canada.

In 1964, The Littlest Hobo debuted on Canadian TV screens. Shot in colour, it was broadcast in black and white and filmed completely in British Columbia.
The show aired for 61 episodes from 1964 to 1967. A successful show, it was overshadowed by the later version.

The dog that portrayed The Littlest Hobo on that show was London, who was owned and trained by Charles Eisenmann. London appeared in 48 episodes while Eisenmann's other dogs such as Toro, Litlon and Thorn appeared in the rest.

London was named for the British city where Eisenmann survived a bombing during the Second World War. A semi-professional baseball player, when he returned to the USA Eisenmann joined the Bismarck Barons and his dog London became the mascot of the team.

London became famous for being able to bow to the crowd, fetch a bat and a broom, run the bases, imitate a kangaroo, turn out a light and even do a little typewriting. Eisenmann trained London in three languages, English, French and German.

After the first Littlest Hobo show ended, Eisenmann wrote Stop! Sit! And Think! in 1968. He later wrote other books about dog training.
For years, The Littlest Hobo brand was in the courts over who owned the rights. It was finally resolved in the late-1970s.
