They've already cut down the Philosopher's Tree due to overtourism, and that was about 10 years ago.

Knowing farmers, it is the crop shading which they are felling the trees for. And also knowing farms, they will find the trees were actually useful, either roosting birds that eat pest insects, or something else of that nature.

I have a hunch they've wanted to do this for a while and the increased tourism gave them a good excuse to lobby the town to finally do it.
