Also be sure to just. Ask the artist if it’s okay to make any comparisons if they haven’t mentioned if they are or not. Some might be okay with it but a lot are not. Just ask, we don’t bite 💚

Absolutely! It goes both ways 🙂 I always try to advocate people give the benefit of the doubt & assume the best intentions. Clearly the person was excited but wasn't sure how to communicate it. But I think it's still a helpful convo to have. We can all strive to be more respectful, not just graceful

If you want to 'compliment' or 'connect' with the artist, however, the BEST way to do that, as we can't know if the artist is okay with these kinds of comments, is to just focus on the art. You can enjoy the comparison internally, or privately with friends. But it's mostly a respect thing. 👍 2/2

As artists, “hey your OC looks like this character from this way more known thing!” often translates to “lol you’re an unoriginal hack.” in our heads, even if that’s not what they meant.

I love having my work compared with another character, because I love that there is some kind of attachment the person is getting through association. But I am an odd-squid in that way.

I recognize that other artists may not want that, and never make that comparison.
