The new US sponsored resolution - which unsurprisingly enjoys Russian support - is three sentences. It does not identify Russia as the aggressor nor does it note the UN Charter's prohibtion on acquiring territory by force. "It looks like something the Russians drafted," one diplomat told me.

Someone has to put a marker down in the road and stand up to him, and a veto is a good way to do it. Defaulting to "we'll stop him later" is now way to proceed, certainly if he's "sending demarches like it's the 1930's"

I'd add that since UK & France have Washington meetings coming up soon, a public veto would set Trump up for a Washington showdown. Available evidence (from North Korea Summit on) is that he will fold if he's pushed back against. It's an opportunity to seize the mantle of leadership internationally

Probably, regardless of whether there will be a veto or not, we can get the same thing from Trump - that is, action to destroy democracy in the EU and strengthen Russia - nothing will change that. Unless the US army stands up for the constitution.

They will veto. It's absolutely, awfully clear that the diplomatic thing to do -- not vetoing, & negotiating for a different text -- does not apply with this administration. Decades have happened in the past week.
