Unique designs are not beneficial if viewers don’t know what you’re supposed to be and cant understand your character concept well enough at a glance to stick around. They’re not going to invest time into reading/watching your lore to make sense of it, they’ll just leave.

Some of this confusion can be prevented with good visual branding like logos and overlays etc., but you’ll be working a lot harder to sell your unique concept than if you had a simple concept most people are already familiar with.

It’s riskier and harder to design a character nobody has seen before AND have it be “readable” to anyone who encounters you. Why take the risk of spending money on a design and branding that may not make sense to viewers, when you know for sure being Gura clone #3275 will?

My design is relatively unique, but I’ve found it somewhat detrimental since it’s not obvious what kind of character I am. (You might guess “a reaper of some kind?” or “evil girl?”)

And as much as I personally like my designs, I don’t think I did the best job at making them digestible within the 30 seconds or less that someone might click into my streams, or see a post of mine on twitter.

I hope to clear this confusion up eventually with a more obvious and on the nose design! Unique is unique but not always great for branding!
