Ford would have been ineligible to in run for reelection in '80 (b/c of the timing of Nixon's resignation), and I assume the GOP would have still nominated Reagan, so I suppose the big speculation is who the Dems would have nominated

A large part of Carter’s regulatory agenda removed regs that were functioning mostly to protect the profits of large companies and opened up competition. Much as we hate cell phone and cable company practices, life was more constrictive before they were allowed to exist.

I think Carter's legacy is largely divorced from his presidential record, due to his unusual achievement of being an amazingly decent person after having been a pretty mediocre official in a position that is usually only held by mostly corrupt, but always power hungry, egos.
