Ah! I did wonder why it was almost a carnival-like celebration. We were traveling to the eclipse centerline, and saw a couple of towns with the celebration going on. As it was Dia de Los Muertos, we assumed that’s what we were seeing.
Reasonable assumption with the knowledge you had going on! Different areas in the Bolivian Altiplano have slightly different traditions. From my understanding, it's syncretism of Catholicism and ancestor worship from pre-colonization days
