i hate when discord changes ANYTHING about their UI because i have to tolerate people who know nothing about UX complaining with absolute confidence how terrible it is for like a week before everyone gets over it and realizes its literally fine

The only reason people get over it is because Discord has proven time and time again that they don't listen to their userbase and will NEVER go back on changes that make the user experience worse. Just because they had a control group doesn't mean everyone's gonna agree
this is a major problem for big corporations in general when it comes to UI design; they're so hyper-obsessed with trying to be "modern" and "improving" their UI is that they fail to realize that what they already have works
but I see your point. If people keep bitching about it, they're gonna see that and keep making worse and worse decisions. But my point is that they're not actually looking at what people are saying, all they see is if the comments are positive/negative, only considering the numbers and not the words
I have a feeling this is an in-between shipping. They are working towards a bigger update. Like the server name being on top mid? That looks like a good opportunity to add a drop down there to see other servers. And since they expanded the user bar? Who knows they may just get rid of the server menu
they pay people for these things!!! you think they dont know??? they test this shit endlessly, they have millions of users and metrics they can pull from, any decision you think is stupid is probably deliberate because of how theyve determined users interact with the app
when your user base is as broad as discord, you need to design for the lowest common denominator, which means clearly delineating between spaces, and making sure all options are available from a single place, even if its redundant
I think that professionals can very consciously make worse interfaces, and that designing for first-time users makes an interface terrible for everyone - including those users once they've gotten some time with it.
i dont disagree, theres definitely cases (see: snapchat) but yeah, like you said below, its not that bad of a change, and the scale of complaints ive seen vs the actual reality of the change warrants the reminder in my eyes lmao
