I spent big chunks of my childhood incredibly stressed because my parents felt the need to try to “cure” me. I don’t even remember a lot of what I went through at the centers they sent me to, but all it accomplished was making me uncomfortable sharing my honest feelings and concerns with them.

Thanks, I appreciate your kindness. I definitely agree. Autistic children shouldn’t be “fixed,” they just need to be understood and supported. Which is hard for parents who only empathize with things they have experience with. People have to accept that not everyone experiences the world the same.

I used to tell myself they were trying to help me "survive" in the real world.

Turns out there is no "surviving" in the real world when you're neurodivergent. You just suffer and that's it. Anything else is a comforting lie. Human beings & their world is our hell.

My parents were no exception.

I hate that you had to go through that. I often feel that way about the world as well, it's so exhausting to navigate as a neurodivergent person sometimes, and even when you put all your effort into doing it, it can still be thankless and punishing anyway.
