My dad was an engineer who worked for the Air Force, and he took great pride in the idea that his work was some small part of the larger American apparatus. Trump, Yarvin, Musk, none of these people seem to understand that a lot of people just want to do good work that they think will contribute.
I am not naive to bloat and corruption and how contracts work, but the PURPOSE of government institutions is to serve the needs of the people, not make money. And many, many people who work for the government believe in that mission.
If you have think the country should be run like a business, then sure, you look at the federal government and think “this is a terribly inefficient way to run a business.” But what if, just maybe, the government has some… other purpose?
