I really appreciated the recent Gundam: Requiem show, where they give it the pacing, cinematography and soundtrack of a horror movie monster. It always feels heroic and optimistic in the cartoon, but has really oppressive weight in the show.

It’s basically the RX-78 with the leftover super-robot stylings knocked off and more mechy bits added, in many ways the base for a lot of the designs that followed.

I love the Turn-A, G-Self, Aerial, but the Mk II is the perfect mix of sleek and chunky/mechanical.

I'll second the Nu Gundam love - without the funnels, it's classic, and with them, it has a cool asymmetrical design. But Mk II is way up there, too.

I think it's a toss up between the Mk II and ν Gundam for me. The funnel array on the ν Gundam gives it such an imposing aura without veering too much away from the chonk.

The weird thing is I agree with you but I also think the RX-78 is perfect. Yet...somehow the Mk II improves on it in those subtle little ways.

My favourite RX-78 shaping is actually the Build Divers one, but out of the box it has awful colours.

Of all the Gundam action figures I have owned (y'know, one or two here and there *ahem*) there have been more of the Mk.2 than any other. Not helped by the Titans having 3 units in that gorgeous blue 😅

It's the definitive Gundam in my mind.
