The thing I never understood about Undercover Boss: did minimum-wage workers really not think anything was up when they suddenly got a new older coworker who wore too much makeup and brought a camera crew?

This incipient idea for an immigration reality show horrifies me because it will work. They know creative editing and a swelling score will paper over any human cruelty and make its consequences palatable for TV.
There's a reason the SNL parodies portray the employees as very obviously knowing it's the boss and just playing along to try to get something out of it
Some of the employees are probably fooled. I don't think it's just all totally staged.
But a *lot* of it is totally people knowing part of the show is the boss rewarding the employees who he worked with at the end, and they're gunning for that — and I don't blame them.
