I am shocked, shocked I tell you that "go woke go broke" turned out to be nonsense made up by regressive right wing echo-chamber dwellers who are desperate to cling on to their right to be vile people at work.

This should of course be..an of course thing for any and all human beings who hear about it. But of course of course... it goes further. They know. They knew. The reason for creating that slogan. And lying about the lack of profits? Was to manipulate the stock ma..i mean social awareness of things.
To understand how they were wrong? All you'd need to do is understand that entertainment companies, ads companies, businesses in general have been categorically burning money for no logical reason for generations. With certain groups chopping and screwing the term appealing to to mean pandering.
Do anything over an over an over an over again in the field of entertainment. And people WILL get tired of it. It'll become stale. Such is having straight white male leads in everything. So of course entertainment appealing to others nets them more profit.
What people can not understand is that a product sucks is what makes it go broke. No one care about the diversity in GTA games, or baldur's gate, the fact in the Sims You can have a couple of the same sex or in Terraria you can change your gender with a potion
I think some people do care. Like, it'd never be the primary reason I buy something, but diversity does make me more inclined to like a game. And I'm a straight, white, bloke. I'm sure people who count as "diverse" are probably more influenced by it.
Yeah, the number of people that are overjoyed when they finally find representation in a game is awesome to watch (and yet sad since it is obvious they have had way too little representation before).
I’d be interested in hearing how Penzey’s is doing since coming out for Kamala. They’ve been a sort of best-kept-secret for cooks for years, but now I feel like everyone knows them. I hope their business is fantastic.
Reminds me TL;DR news when they did research on "woke" movies and found out that there's no correlation between "wokeness" by any definition and box office revenue.
Just without the fact that progressive messaging is more popular and includes more people, it forgets just how much market capture brands have. Coke is never going to feel a hit from a pride flag, they’re the first drink that comes to mind. Like the man said, “I’ll keep drinking that garbage.”
Also, even people who aren't actually lefties like me aren't offended by seeing a pride flag. What the terminally-online "anti-woke" lot don't understand is most people, even on the political right, are not bothered and not offended by seeing, say, a drag queen in an ad.
Being a person who spent 20 years in consumer products, most of them in the C-suite, my experience is that this article makes perfect sense. When you’re trying to sell a product to the mass public, you’ll do better if everyone in that public sees themselves in the product.
Turns out it’s really easy to “prove” anything to yourself once you collapse the universe of reasons something my underperform commercially, critically, or creatively down to a single point.
I'm not surprised this is true, either, but researchers should not say things like, "The assertion is consistently unfounded – but we needed to provide evidence to the contrary."
Well they got it wrong obviously, because just today Truth Social informed us that Taylor Swift has lost a mil-tril-gazill-buckaroos since endorsing Harris. Observer needs to do better research!!!!
I've always held the theory that places like Target were just looking for an excuse to pull back on their LGBT merchandise, regardless of how it sold. Right wing outrage was just a perfect scapegoat.
I think a problem with this article is they mostly discussed very bad ideas that were dressed up as allyship in the marketing. A rainbow sandwich? The horrific Kendall Jenner Pepsi ad? Sending Dylan Mulvaney a personalized Bud Light is maybe the only thing they cite that didn’t deserve criticism.
Like, if M&S wants to support queer people, stand up against the UK government policies that are terrorizing trans kids. If Pepsi believes Black Lives Matter, is Kendall Jenner who should be getting that endorsement money?
As my partner points out, that Pepsi ad was pro cop. It was as bad as when Lush UK handed out lunches to cops at protests. If they wanted to show a progressive attitude about cops she would’ve put that can in a sock or pillowcase and swung it at them.
Yeah, the Kendall Jenner ad got backlash not because it was "woke" but because it was trying to bizarrely both-sides the police and BLM. Really bad example to use. The whole article seems a bit like it's trying to spin the actual findings of the study in weird ways based on assumptions.
So, appeal to consumers with a rising income or pander to retirees with a fixed income growing shorter and shorter as economic strife enabled by their own elected officials grows further out of control? Gee, I wonder why that works?
Shareholders ready to sue Ford, Lowes, Tractor Supply Co, Harley Davidson. The shareholders will teach these twits a lesson for knee jerking to Starbuck.
It's weird. I won't drink in 'spoons, will now seek alternatives to Dyson and have added Tesla to products I will never buy. Any whiff of reprehensible turds at the helm or Brexitty undercurrents will incur avoidance. So it seems the opposite might be true.
There’s no evidence that their sales fell because of a right wing boycott. Notably, sales fell *after* they had removed pride merch - and after widespread criticism of the removal.

But
being true, *does* make a slogan rhyme.

Learned that lesson from Jake and Amir.
It's good that sales data was used - not just consumer intention.
The data isn't available. We can't see how they controlled for ad-spend or diversity within vs. across markets.
But doing the right thing should not need a business case.
CRT argues that majority cultures will only act in the interest of minorities when it benefits them.
It's not saying don't do it, but it is saying reasons other than self-interest matter.

You'd think MuskRat would care about his stock value.
He cares about the taxes he doesn't want to pay, but not that?
