He was okay with the Giants and the Chargers in relief. But this is like if Geno took that 2022 year and went somewhere else. There was no reason to have faith that he would improve. But Geno did while the OL and Defense got worse.

Did Geno really have a starting chance behind Eli for the NYG? No, Eli is a franchise legend. How bout with the Chargers behind P Rivers? No, another franchise legend. Russ was still in his prime when Geno came...not supplanting Russ. So Geno wasn't given many "real" opportunities through the years.

Darnold was brought into San Fran to be a backup in case Purdy got hurt.

Darnold was brought into Minnesota to be the bridge to JJ. JJ tore his meniscus in preseason.

Darnold is now going to be the guy.

Jerry Reese, the Giants GM, LOVED Geno & jumped all over the chance to grab him when Jets cut him. He saw him as Eli's replacement & pushed for Geno to start the game that ended Eli's streak which cost him his job. Point being, things were aligned with NYG for Geno to take over if he performed.

Given the offensive personnel it is no mystery why Geno would struggle in his 1 NYG start. Substitute Geno for Eli in this lineup and its still crap.

Backlash was due to a legend being replaced by a guy who fumbled twice on drives when they lost by a TD. Still doesn't obscure the fact that Geno had the GM (and coach) pushing for him. Again, to say he had no real chance with NYG is wrong. He had his advocates.
