Yep. Once can be an aberration and a prudent mind accounts for that. Twice and your self-defense mechanisms kick into high gear. I applaud Canada, and anyone else who takes responsibility for their own future. We'll have to wait and see if America ever does.

We're a very young country. We had a revolution, we had a civil war, but as a conglomerate of immigrants we're still learning what it means to really define ourselves as a nation. Canada would be wise to learn from our ugly teenage phase and bypass this awful, destructive learning curve.

I think that if the US completely mended its ways after Trump and kept it up for a generation (~30 years), it would be forgotten. However, who is confident that the US can do that? It seems very unlikely. So your prediction that it won't be forgotten may be right.

As an American, this has been devastating and bewildering and completely unpredictable. I only hope that Canadians know the only people who want this are in the Trump regime. I don't know what their sick plan is, but no citizens are behind this. Nobody saw this coming, nobody wants it.

Honestly, I think we could have forgotten it in a few years after the first term. But when they re-elected Trump, it became obvious that this could be a regular thing. That calls for a permanent realignment of allies. EU, here we come!
